Student Checklist – Am I Ready to Use GenAI?

GenAI can be a powerful tool to support you in your learning, but before you use it, make sure you consider the below. GenAI misuse can not only be harmful to you, but can also lead to academic misconduct.

The checklist below is for you to walk through your considerations before deciding whether to use GenAI in your assessments.

GenAI Readiness Checklist

Have I checked the Unit Outline to see whether or not I can use GenAI for my assessments? How am I allowed to use it?
What is my purpose in using GenAI? Which GenAI tool will be most suitable for my purpose?
Do I know how to build effective prompts? Only high-quality input will generate effective output.
Am I aware of the limitations and risks of GenAI, particularly LLMs?
Am I breaching copyright in my GenAI use?
Am I using GenAI to build on my learning instead of using it as a short-cut? Am I using it to explore new ideas, deconstruct or simplify complex concepts, or engage with additional information that supports my learning?
Do I know when and how to validate information generated by GenAI? Do I know how to critically evaluate whether an output is trustworthy and credible?
Am I aware that there are sophisticated tools to combat AI-writing, and improper use of GenAI will lead to academic misconduct?
Do I know how to reference and cite GenAI appropriately?
Have I completed the Academic Integrity and GenAI Use Declaration?
Do I know who to ask if I have any questions about GenAI and GenAI use in assessments?
